The local chapter was founded 4 years ago and currently has one house in construction. Volunteers are always welcomed to work on existing projects. No skills necessary.
How much does a Habitat House cost? The average home in the U.S. is over $43,000. A habitat home is going to be about $25,000 or depending on the cost of land and materials. The monthly payments for the new home owner are low because the owner usually helps build the home, other volunteers contribute their labor, and there is no interest charge on the mortgage.Applicants for a low cost home must be able to pay the monthly mortgage. Other criteria for selection includes need as determined by the local selection committee. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.
To get on the list of potential recipients or to become a volunteer builder - contact the Natchitoches chapter at 318-352-7311

ALL DONATIONS TO HABITAT ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!The FACTS about Habitat for Humanity
What is Natchitoches Habitat for Humanity? Incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit organization in 1998, Natchitoches Parish Habitat has signed an affiliate covenant with Habitat for Humanity International. Governed by a local board of directors, NPH is responsible for family selection, fund-raising, public relations and site selection.
What is Habitat for Humanity International? Founded in 1976 by Linda and Millard Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International is an ecumenical, Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. By having needy and affluent people work together in equal partnership, Habitat builds new relationships and a sense of community as well as new housing.
How does Habitat work? Through tax-deductible donations of money, materials and volunteer labor, Habitat builds, rehabilitates and repairs homes with the help of future homeowners. Houses are sold to partner families with no-profit, no-interest mortgages issued over a fixed time period. Small monthly mortgage payments, including taxes and insurances, are repaid over an average of 20 years and deposited into a revolving "Fund for Humanity," which supports the construction of more houses.
How are families selected? Families can fill out an application to be considered for a Habitat home. A family selection committee chooses homeowners on the basis of housing need, ability to repay the loan, history showing evidence of responsibility and willingness to become partners with Habitat.
The maximum allowable income for a qualified family is $18,500 per year. Applications are available at the Natchitoches Public Library,...
