Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit ecumenical housing ministry.

Habitat seeks to eliminate shacks and homelessness and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat for Humanity, International was founded by Millard Fuller in 1976.  There are now nearly 1800 affiliates in all 50 states and in 62 other countries around the world.  You can find Fuller's book, No More Shacks, in the public library.

The local chapter was founded 4 years ago and currently has one house in construction.

Habitat for Humanity of Natchitoches is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing ministry that seeks to unite people of many different faiths, churches, civic organizations and businesses, in a partnership to provide decent, affordable housing for all.

Mission Statement:

Habitat for Humanity of Natchitoches [HFHN]  seeks to build decent affordable houses for families who otherwise wouldn't be able to buy their own homes. The "sweat equity" experience of families partnering with us to build their own homes can provide a sense of accomplishment, ownership, and new hope.

HFHN chooses homeowners on the basis of the level of need, the ability to repay the mortgage, and willingness to become partners in the program.

It selects homeowner families according to criteria that do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, or ethnic back ground.

Through volunteer labor, including "sweat equity" hours of potential homeowners, and tax deductible donations of funds and materials, HFH-GJA is able to build affordable homes.  The buyer gets a new home for about half of its commercial value.

The homes are sold to partner  families and HFHN issues a non-interest mortgage over a fixed period. Mortgage terms discourage quick subsequent sale of the home for profit.

Who is eligible for a Habitat home?  Families with a combined income under $20,000 are eligible. The local chapter will make the final selection based partially on the ability of the family to repay the loan.  Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.

Typically there are over 100 families waiting for a home.

How much does a Habitat House cost?  The average Habitat 3-bedroom home in the U.S. is around  $43,000 - less than half of the cost of a commercial new construction.

Someone making less than $20,000 can usually afford a habitat home.  The exact cost is going to depend on the cost of land and materials.  The value of the completed home will be nearly double the investment.  There are restrictions that discourage selling the home for a quick profit. People who have to move usually sell the home back to the local chapter at no profit.

The monthly payments for the new home owner are low because the owner(s) usually helps build the home, other volunteers contribute their labor, and there is no interest charge on the mortgage.
