| WHO WE ARE
The Grand Ecore Vigilantes is a non-profit club made up of a group of folks that enjoy the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS), the work's fastest growing shooting sport. CAS is a sport the entire family can participate in, with approximately 20% of the participants being women, and 10% in the junior category under age 17. We follow the rules and regulations set forth by the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), which created and governs our sport. WHAT WE DO
Our goal is to keep alive the "Spirit of the Old West," a
time period spanning 1849 through 1899. We do this by creating a
character (we call in an "alias"), dressing in 1800's attire,
and using firearms made, or of a design used prior to 1900, in shooting
competitions. Many participants conduct extensive research in
order to present a truly authentic background for their alias.
While a person could spend large sums of money to get "the
look," it's not necessary for a beginner. Some start with
nothing more than a pair of plain jeans, a long-sleeve cowboy shirt, a
cowboy hat & boots, and slowly add to their wardrobe a piece at a
time. MATCHES A typical CAS Match will have 4 to 10 scenarios, or
"stages" to complete, usually following an overall
theme. A stage is generally designed to use three types of
firearms - single action pistols, lever action rifles, and double barrel
shotguns (or pump shotguns with EXPOSED hammers). The SASS
Shooters handbook (available online) explains which firearms are legal
to use. Most clubs write the stages to involve the use of two
pistols. The scoring is a blend of elapsed time and misses.
There are often specific procedures within a stage requiring the
competitor to shoot the targets in a certain order, or to move to
different areas of the range. In Main Match competitions, Safety
Rules require both rifles and pistols to be pistol calibers, and the
cartridges loaded with lead bullets only with low muzzle
velocities to prevent damage to the targets and "splatterback"
(targets are as close as 7 yards) Shotguns cannot be larger than
10 gauge or smaller than 20 gauge, and number 4 lead shot or smaller is
used. Occasionally there are "side matches" using firearms not allowed during regular Main Match stages. Examples would be Long Range Rifle - both lever action and single shot in larger rifle calibers, Derringer and Pocket Pistol side matches. Sometimes there are even Cowboy Trap & Skeet and Sporting Clays side matches! FUN & SAFE We like to have fun and enjoy ourselves, dressing up, socializing, and flinging lead downrange - but in every aspect of CAS, we emphasize safety. Eye and ear protection are required for both participants and spectators. Rules are presented before each match at the Safety Briefing, and participants are encouraged to ask questions if uncertain. If a shooter, for any reason, disregards the safety rules, he or she can be disqualified from the stage or match, and depending on the frequency or seriousness, asked to leave the range. Remember - SAFETY FIRST! New shooters are welcomed. We encourage you to come see what we do, and join with the rest of us that "rode" with the Lone Ranger and Hoppalong, The Duke, Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, and Belle Starr! WHADDA YA SAY.....PILGRIM?! |
