Frequently Asked Questions

Why Do I Have to Have an Alias and Dress Up?

Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) is really a fantasy game.  Developing a character and costuming helps complete the Old West image, setting our sport apart and maintaining the "Spirit of the Game," not to mention lots of fun1

Can I Bring My Family?

Of Course!  This is a family sport.  Approximately 20% of the registered SASS members are women, and 10% are juniors.  There are spouses that choose not to shoot, but still pick an alias, dress up and come out to watch or help with the Match chores.  And, there's always the social events that give you a chance to show off your fancy "Sunday go to meeting" duds, too!

Do I Have to Be A Member of SASS?

No, but we strongly recommend it.  The Single Action Shooting Society is the parent organization that created and governs our sport.  The Grand Ecore Vigilantes follow the rules set forth by SASS.  By joining SASS, you permanently register your alias, get a unique membership number, and no one else can use your alias in SASS sanctioned events.  (All SASS sanctioned events require SASS membership).  You also get the Journal of Cowboy Action Shooting, the Cowboy Chronicle, jam-packed with articles on every aspect of cowboy action shooting and vendors of all types.

What If I Don't Have All My Guns Right Now?

Cowboy Action Shooting is unique among shooting sports.  We understand that not everyone can start out buying a full set of guns.  If a new shooter comes to a match with partial or no equipment, they are generally swamped by offers from other shooters to use what they have.  This is a good way for a tenderfoot to try many different types of guns before deciding what to buy.  Unless there are extenuating circumstances, most new shooters generally have a minimum set of guns within a few months of starting.

What is the Minimum Number of Guns I Need to Start?

After taking the previous question and answer into consideration, the minimum set up would be a rifle, a shotgun, and one pistol.  Most CAS clubs and all major events write stages to include the use of two pistols.  If a shooter has one pistol, they have two choices; reload on the clock (slow and frowned upon at major matches due to time constraints), or borrow a gun until they are able to pick up a second pistol.

Do I Have to Spend a Fortune on Guns and Clothes?

You can spend a great deal of money in this game, but there are solutions for "fiscally limited" gun & clothing budgets.  If you don't mind used guns, you can find pistols for under $300 each and long guns between $250 and $600.  Check with other CAS members - lots of "first sets" are out there and you may get lucky and find a complete set up all at once for a reasonable price!

A pair of plain jeans, cowboy shirt, boots and a hat is what most of us started with, adding pieces as finances allowed.  For those that sew, there are many patterns available for 1880's style clothing.  Thrift shops are another great source of clothes.  A pair of men's slacks with the belt loops cut off, and buttons for suspenders sewn on, are very authentic.  Collarless shirts that button all the way or partially up the front work great.  For the ladies that want a more feminine look, simple full-length skirts and high collar blouses, or split skirts are available both readymade and in patterns.  And for "bad girls," those frilly underthings, corsets, and saloon girl outfits always make for colorful additions!

Cowboy boots are not the only footgear legal to wear.  If a person has physical ailments that prevent boot wearing, there are other choices.  Many frontier characters wore moccasins, "townies," or "eastern dudes" wore low cut shoes or brogans similar to today's shoes.  Lumberjacks had lace-up packer boots and Mexican peasants and priests sported leather sandals.  Clothing items that are not legal are tennis shoes, baseball caps, designer jeans, short sleeve shirts (if you're hot - roll 'em up), and "shady brady" feathered hats.  The only other limitation is your imagination.  So, Saddle Up, Pardner!
